Personalizing Your Kitchen Sink Workstation Key Tips

Julien consulted Jen, an interior design specialist, to address client inquiries regarding key considerations before investing in a kitchen sink workstation. As the founder of Jen Sottosanti Design, she guides clients in Sarnia and throughout Southern Ontario to realize their design dreams.

Four years ago when she was building her new home, she learned about the Julien sink collections through our cabinet installers, and it was love at first sight; she knew she wanted them in her new home !

Jen has graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions. Let's continue with part 2 of our interview with her.

JULIEN:  When personalizing your kitchen sink workstation, there are a few key tips to consider. Could you please elaborate on them?

JEN: For something to be a focal point, it must grab attention when you first walk into that space. It doesn’t necessarily have to have the WOW factor but be unique or different from the norm and stands out or is the main point of interest in the overall design. To create a standout focal point, choose a sink that reflects your personal style and tastes. Consider unique designs such as Julien's stainless collections or the timeless Fira fireclay collection, each offering customizable options to suit different kitchen designs and preferences. From the classic collection, which offers 3 different models depending on your design style, to optimizing your work zone for the culinary client at heart, with the smart station collection. There is even the corner sink- unique to Julien, that can optimize your workspace and offer better flow between your work zones.

As much as I love the durability of the stainless, the Fira fireclay collection has my heart! It is a timeless classic option and fits perfectly in most designs with the option to use the shaker style apron or the flat apron. And the part I especially love is that they also come with accessories that allow you to turn your sink into a functioning workstation. With Julien, I not only love how their sink options are beautiful, practical and elegant, but you have options with sink materials, styles and sizes. You can even fully customize your dream kitchen from their 25 a la carte options! It’s so nice to have the options that can work with a wide range of lifestyles!

JULIEN: What common mistakes should one avoid when designing the kitchen sink area?

JEN: I think the common mistake I see is not planning ahead! Depending on whether you are building a home from scratch or renovating, there is so much on the mind of picking and choosing-and usually it's a rush decision or one that is made on a whim. I hear so many people say “I wish I would have known” or “I wish I would have thought of that”. That’s where hiring a designer can definitely come in handy for so many people, who are too busy or unaware of those critical choices. Think about the space you have and maximize the functionality of it. From the size, style and durability of the sink needed, to the accessories and appliances that make your job, when cooking, seamless.

JULIEN: How should you approach designing for limited space in the kitchen sink area?

JEN: Prioritize essentials when space is limited. Opt for a smaller sink and accessories that maximize functionality without cluttering countertops. Accessories like drying racks or colanders can help optimize your workspace efficiently. I love to keep the countertops clear of clutter (even when I am cooking) and so limiting how many things I would have to put on them if I had limited space would also be critical in my decision making- like having a drying rack accessory so my dishes could dry in the sink and not on the countertop or having the mixing bowl or colander accessory if I don’t have enough countertop space to prep on.

JULIEN: Why is integrating sustainable and eco-friendly design practices important in kitchen design?

JEN: Thinking about sustainability is and should be a priority. There are so many options today that allow you to dream and create in an eco-friendly way, where design doesn’t have to be compromised. Sustainable practices ensure longevity and minimize environmental impact. Choose materials with low VOCs, opt for timeless designs, and prioritize energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting. Using natural materials like wood or metal over plastic also contributes to a more eco-friendly kitchen.

JULIEN: What should one consider when coordinating lighting choices for the kitchen sink area?

JEN: Lighting is the jewelry of design. It’s a great way to showcase your taste and style, but also be super functional and practical. I try to incorporate layers of lighting in my designs that allows the client to choose “when” they will need to use that light depending on the amount of natural daylight they have or don’t have, the time of day and the task they are doing.Lighting plays a crucial role in functionality and aesthetics. Incorporate layers of lighting such as pendants, sconces, and under-cabinet lights to suit different tasks and enhance visual appeal. Proper lighting enhances the functionality of your sink area, especially in kitchens where tasks range from cooking to cleaning.

JULIEN: What innovative tips can enhance both the functionality and beauty of a kitchen sink area?

JEN: The kitchen is the heart of the home - where we spend most of our time cooking, eating and socializing. Making a kitchen not only beautiful but functional is the key to allowing you to move about it, as you prep, cook and clean. Focus on creating a functional layout with a well-designed work triangle (sink, stove, refrigerator). Optimize storage space to keep essentials accessible and organized. Incorporate quality materials for durability and consider smart technologies like touchless faucets for convenience. Lastly, personalize the space with decorative accents to make it inviting and unique.
